The Dean of Finance and Operations reports to theSenior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and serves as the
chief budget and contracts officer for the college.The Dean of Finance and Operations is a member of the President’s
Cabinet and supports the work of various committees/councilsof the College. The Dean of Finance and Operations
manages the finance department staff and overseesvendor relations and large project expenditure for the College, working
directly with the Director of Information Technology,Director of Facilities, and the Human Resources Officer.Because of
the small size of the institution, the Dean of Financeand Operations must be able to move seamlessly between leadership,
management and hands-on engagement.

Professional Qualifications

Desired qualifications include demonstrated success in providing financial oversight and managing vendor relations; a
commitment to the ecological thinking and action mission of the college; a desire to work collaborativelywith the members
of the College to support the mission of the Collegeand engage actively in the community life of theCollege; and an
appreciation for and interest in life and the outdoors in spectacular rural northeastern Vermont.

Competitive candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or equivalent and five or more years of related
work experience. CPA and/or experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred.

The Dean of Finance and Operations demonstrates:
A thorough understanding of accounting policies, practices, and procedures, particularly as they apply to non-profits

and/or higher education, including federal and state laws that govern higher education and financial reporting

  • A deep understanding of internal controls and riskmanagement techniques, best practices, policies and procedures
and the importance of ensuring the integrity of financialand operational activity within the College and with
external constituents;
  • Interest in, and willingness to, work hands-on with accounting data and analysis;
  • Advanced analytical and systems thinking skills, combined with curiosity and ability to brainstorm innovative
  • Exceptional financial and administrative management skills, including the ability to prioritize, organize, coordinate
and direct multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Experience and demonstrated competencies working with accounting and reporting software, with preference for
individuals with Blackbaud Financial Edge/Raiser's Edge experience;
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and the ability to create and maintain complex financial forecasts and modeling;
  • Strong leadership and human relations abilities including the capacity for effective communication with all the
College’s stakeholders; and
  • An ability to lead by example through a high level of professionalism, “can do” spirit, strong workethic and

a desire to “roll up one’s sleeves” when necessary.

Specific duties include:
Maintain accurate financial reporting and internal controls including working with the President, Senior Vice

President, and budget managers in budget preparation and analysis, cash management, meeting compliance
requirements, and coordination of internal and external audits and tax preparation;

  • Designing, documenting and implementing policies and procedures which result in timely and accurate
financial reporting and budgeting information;
  • Management of the finance office staff including accountreconciliations and general ledger, and assuring

accurate documenting of accounts receivable, payroll, purchasing and accounts payable functions, student billing
and collections;

  • Preparation, analysis and presentation of timely andaccurate financial reports, including quarterly and annual
budgets, cash flow, and multi-year forecasting models, and external financial reporting for institutional accountability
and accreditation reporting;
  • Record keeping and reporting for restricted funds such as endowments, restricted gifts, grants and scholarships and
the expenditures related to them;
  • Working collaboratively with departmental budget managers to assure accurate and prudent uses of resources;
  • Ensure that all required federal, state and local reporting requirements are met in an accurate and timely
  • Manage and oversee vendor agreements and contracts related to IT, Facilities, campus planning, construction

and renovations, sustainability planning, public safety, transportation and parking, and the support of external

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned and as necessary to meet the evolving needs of the College.

This a full-time, benefits-eligible position. Annual salary is $75,000 - $85,000 commensurate with experience.
