The Office of Financial Aid is part of the Enrollment Management unit, where we support the recruitment and student success efforts of the campus through the administration of financial aid programs. We encourage applications for an Assistant Director of Financial Aid Advising! This full-time position reports to the Associate Director of Advising and is responsible for the management of our frontline operations. This position is part of the leadership team for the Office of Financial Aid.

Who We Are

The CU Boulder Office of Financial Aid is committed to helping students pay for college by building innovative programs to support access and graduation, empowering students to make healthy financial decisions, investing in the development of our staff, and engaging lawmakers and stakeholders to improve aid policy. We coordinate over $425M in grants, scholarships, work-study and loans for over 20,000 students each year. Our staff consists of 38 full-time professional employees and 50-60 student employees.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Administration and Leadership
  • Recruit, supervise, train, empower and evaluate a team with varied strengths that serve our office's financial aid counseling duties.
  • Maintain a comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge of financial aid rules and regulations.
  • Ensure the entire team including front-line student staff maintain compliance with state and federal regulations and University guidelines and is trained to answer client questions in accordance with these rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Provide leadership as part of the OFA management team responsible for the identification, analysis, and implementation of financial aid, enrollment management, and office policy.
  • Represent the Office of Financial Aid in the resolution of conflicts relating to student and staff issues.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff in managing counseling schedules and ensuring adequate coverage to assist students and families.
  • Collaborate with all areas of the office to ensure all resources are utilized during peak seasons.
  • Cultivate working relationships with the university community including Bursar's Office, Admissions Office, and Registrar's Office.
  • Build partnerships with other key partners such as academic advising, career services, student affairs, etc.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining written procedures for the counseling area.
  • Evaluate and identify ways to continually improve our customer service and optimize resources.
Supervision
  • Ensure that the work assigned to the team is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure employees maintain compliance with state and federal regulations and University guidelines and that staff is trained to answer client questions in accordance with these rules, regulations, and guidelines in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Create, supervise and evaluate counseling schedule.
  • Create, supervise and evaluate the universal tasks assigned to counselors.
  • Provide expertise on counselor-specific duties such as Professional Judgment, Satisfactory Academic Progress, overawards, document processing, emails, and counseling.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to assign and prioritize shared counselor duties.
Counseling
  • Provide general counseling and advising services to students and families regarding scholarships, financial aid opportunities, and educational expenses.
  • Assist with the application processes.
  • Award, interpret and explain Title IV, state and institutional regulations to clients, and the impact of regulations on funding levels, eligibility, and processing.
  • Apply rules and regulations and analyze individual client circumstances, resolve problems and explain results.
  • Exercise professional judgment when clients have unusual financial circumstances.
Processing
  • Assist in processing Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals and Professional Judgment appeals.
  • Assist with PLUS loan increases, counseling review workflow, over awards, and other projects as assigned.
  • Assist with Verification Processing or awarding projects as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy of documents and complete processing of documents when assisting students and families to ensure their application is completed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that the work assigned to the team is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Cross-train with other teams and assist with processing needs as vital.
  • Ensure student employees are adequately trained on processing procedures and timelines.
Outreach
  • Conduct outreach presentations on financial aid and scholarships.
  • Ensure team participation in outreach activities.
  • Develop and assess staff presentation skills to ensure that outreach events optimally engage prospective students, parents, and other populations.
Professional Development
  • Participates in training seminars, conferences, committee meetings, etc. for professional development in the areas of Title IV financial aid.
  • Attend staff meetings, retreats, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Collaborate with your supervisor to determine areas for professional growth and identify and request appropriate training opportunities.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $70,000.

What We Require

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 2+ years of job-related experience, including lead or supervision experience.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Five years of financial aid experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of State of Colorado financial aid regulations.
  • Experience with federal financial aid data systems including NSLDS, FAA Access, and COD.
  • Experience using PeopleSoft student information system.
  • NASFAA credentials.
  • Bilingual.
