The Tepper School of Business  lives at the heart of Carnegie Mellon University, guided by a mission to transform the world, pioneering and innovating at the intersection of business, technology, and analytics. The school offers a future-focused business school experience, tailored for the complexity of today’s marketplace. Where others see challenges, we see opportunity. Always looking ahead, we are consistently moving the world forward with innovative ideas, creative solutions, and new approaches.

The CI-Lab@CMU seeks to hire a postdoctoral fellow with a background in team science, organizational behavior, computational social science, human-computer interaction or a related discipline to collaborate on an on-going research project investigating collective intelligence in human-machine groups. Our lab has explored different methods of capturing collective intelligence in collaborating groups, including real-time metrics gauging the quality of collaboration.

We are now exploring the indicators that would enable machines to understand the quality of collaboration taking place so that they can be better collaborators in human teams. We are conducting experiments both in the laboratory and via the Internet to develop, test, and improve these metrics and potential interventions they could suggest to increase collective intelligence. The postdoctoral fellow will be a collaborator on this research and in charge of implementing these studies and will serve as the project manager for the program of research taking place in this grant-funded program.

The postdoctoral fellow would be supervised by Anita Williams Woolley at Carnegie Mellon, and work with collaborators at CMU and other institutions as part of the larger research group working on collective intelligence. The fellowship/position is for one year with funding in place and the strong intention to extend for a second year.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.
  • Conduct research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies may be required depending on area and specialty.
  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You must demonstrate:

  • Interest and skills blending social psychology or organizational behavior with computer science and implementation.
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and self-motivation
  • Problem-solving, reasoning, and analytical skills
  • Organization and planning skills

Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within the Carnegie Mellon University. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • PhD in social psychology, organizational behavior, HCI, information science, cognitive psychology, quantitative psychology, communication, computer science, or a related discipline required.

Requirements:

  • Successful Background Check

Application must include:

  • Cover letter describing career objectives, background, and experience
