Position Description

 

Position Summary
The Vice President for Finance & Planning reports directly to the President and is responsible for leading the on-going financial management, budget and business planning components of the University’s strategic plan. S/he leads the process for designing financial strategies that support the innovation and strategic development of the University. In addition, this position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and clarity of each budget process, including the development of appropriate forecasting.
Likewise, the Vice President works collaboratively with the President’s Cabinet to develop the University’s strategic plan and provide day-to-day management of the University’s financial resources. In conjunction with the President’s Cabinet, this position identifies and leads the process for establishing actions steps critical to the strategic plan and fosters the University implementing procedures and programs that support achieving the strategic goals at the optimum pace. The position ensures that strategies are clearly understood by all stakeholders and oversees the development of highly productive relationships and partnerships for the benefit of the University’s strategic plan.

  • Demonstrated ability to design business models and financial strategies for new initiatives
  • Excellent strategic planning and project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively
  • Thorough knowledge of computer applications/programs
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of fiscal and business management practices in budget management, fund management, endowment management, and financial aid
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal and relationship management skills that allow for the development of positive and effective relationships across campus as well as with external constituents
  • Demonstrated management skills, including the ability to direct, develop and delegate to diverse teams effectively
  • Knowledge of Christian higher education
  • Ability to advise the President on strategies for developing the University’s market position and status as a premier institution of Christian higher education

Primary Duties
1. Provide leadership for building and managing the University’s long term strategic vision and plan.
2. Facilitate the maintenance and monitoring of the University’s strategic plan for President’s Cabinet, the Board of Trustees and governance groups.
3. Plan and execute research and analysis to support the University’s strategy decisions.
4. Oversee the development and management of integrated, strategy-aligned workplans.
5. Work collaboratively with President’s Cabinet and School Deans to build accurate business models associated with generative thinking, new initiative development, and strategic planning.
6. Direct and manage the process of developing and challenging financial assumptions and implications on strategic planning; build processes to discover the financial impact of strategic planning objectives.
7. Model creative options for resourcing new programs/initiatives within the context of the University’s strategic plan.
8. Develop programs & processes that better leverage existing resources. Work collaboratively with the President’s Cabinet to develop strategies for growing and diversifying revenue streams. Suggest potential revenue streams.
9. Guide the process of comprehensive planning for the institution including use of price and discounts (tuition fees, financial aid, etc.) to achieve strategic goals.
10. Develop methods for increasing the University’s fiscal flexibility.
11. Create fiscal models that allow the University to consider possible partnerships and acquisitions.
12. Work collaboratively with President’s Cabinet and School Deans to coordinate budget development so that budget development can be managed in a timely fashion.
13. Provide accurate forecasts, cost estimates and budget illustrations for planning purposes, including developing a dynamic long range financial planning model which can simulate financial risks and results.
14. Facilitate the maintenance and monitoring of the University’s the budget and long-range forecast for President’s Cabinet, the Board of Trustees and governance groups.
15. Create a budget process that allows for the University to respond to ad hoc opportunities throughout the year as they occur.
16. Design budget strategies that allow for allocation of funding to high priority areas.
17. Oversee the education and professional development of budget managers.
18. Promote an environment of openness and transparency surrounding financial matters.
19. Make recommendations on policy development and implementation, and strategy alternatives.
20. Oversee all aspects of the University’s accounting and business procedures, including cash management, investment management, and internal and external audit procedures.
21. Oversee the investment and management of the University’s endowment funds.
22. Prepare and report to the Board of Trustees and President on capital investments and performance.
23. Control and manage the University’s debt.
24. Represent the University to outside financial institutions, government agencies, and external auditors
25. Maintain an up-to-date understanding of changes in tax regulations, IRS reporting requirements, and other governmental regulations so as to ensure the University’s compliance.
26. Institutional Leadership including: Participate as a member of the President’s Cabinet; Oversee and manage the Finance Division of the University; Chair the Strategic Planning Committee Chair University Council; Provide leadership for the following Board of Trustees Committees: Committee on Finance, Audit Committee and the Investment Committee; Partner with the President in leading the Board of Trustees Executive Committee on Strategic Planning
