BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN) is seeking a Director of Budget Planning and Finance Analysis to direct the daily operations of budget administration, financial analysis and planning, and financial aid administration. S/he will provide management oversight for unit budgets, financial planning and analysis, financial aid administration and associated fund management, and faculty practice account management. With UMSN leadership, the Director of Budget Planning and Financial Analysis will direct business planning, financial reporting, and business analysis.

Responsibilities*

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Budget Planning and Management

School of Nursing Budget

  • Annual budget preparation and longer-term budget planning for the UMSN and the departments.
  • Working with UMSN leadership, develop and model short- and long-term financial planning for the business affairs of the school.
  • Prepare the annual UMSN Budget Plan and Provost Budget Request.
  • Develop the five-year financial projections for all funds as part of the annual budget cycle.
  • Working with UMSN leadership, facilitate the development of the annual budget report and associated financial requests for the Office of the Provost.
  • Direct the planning, allocation and reporting for ER/Gift, Auxiliary and Designated funds within UMSN.
  • Evaluate and suggest various courses of action that affect business operations.

Unit Budgets

  • Direct the annual budget process for the departments and offices within UMSN.
  • Work with unit administrators on all financial and budget issues including longer-term budget planning as necessary.
  • Oversee the reconciliation and financial reporting for all unit budgets.
  • Consult with unit leaders on financial planning for special initiatives.

Financial Analysis and Modeling

  • Provide strategic analysis, cost analysis and business planning expertise and recommendations to the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Prepare complex financial and cost analysis, including the analysis of academic programs, clinical operations, and research activities.
  • Provide project management expertise for special initiatives. Develop and deliver high quality, concise presentations regarding financial matters.
  • Independently evaluate and suggest various courses of action that affect business operations.
  • Prepare materials to present to senior leadership. Summarize, interpret and present data in a meaningful, clear and concise manner for presentation and discussion.
  • Work with the Associate Dean of Professional Practice on faculty practice arrangements, including contract development, financial planning and invoicing.
  • Direct the planning, reconciliation and financial reporting for accounts associated with faculty practice initiatives.

Financial Aid Administration

  • Oversight of the planning and distribution of financial aid and scholarships allocated from UMSN-held accounts.
  • Working with the central U-M Office of Financial Aid and UMSN leadership, plan, award and administer financial aid to UMSN graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Reconcile all gift and endowment accounts.
  • Work with the UMSN Office of Development and Alumni Relations on donor reporting and information needed for donor stewardship.

Required Qualifications*

 

Education and Experience:

  • A degree in business, accounting or a related field required; CPA required.
  • Twelve (12) or more years of relevant work experience including accounting, financial analysis, project management, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to develop financial budgets, lead financial analysis projects, work across unit boundaries, develop accurate and concise financial reports, organize, initiate, and motivate is required.
  • Candidate must have excellent teamwork and superior oral and written communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums.
  • Excellent presentation skills. Strong ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint).
  • Meticulous attention to detail, excellent proofreading skills; ability to produce documents of high quality, while meeting deadlines.

Work Schedule

 

Shift/Hours/Days:  8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; may include some occasional weekend or evening hours.
