We are seeking a Staff Accountant to help us perform various accounting and reconciliation functions involving APL benefit programs and participate in other General Accounting functions such as cost processing, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). We are looking for someone with a focus on partnering, who is detail oriented with a continuous process improvement approach and excellent organizational, prioritization and interpersonal skills. Also important to success is maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment.


As a Staff Accountant...

  • Your primary responsibility will be the completion of the quarterly premium billing process for retirees and staff on disability leave and monthly processing and balancing for APL’s medical, dental, and other staff and retiree health and welfare plans in support of APL benefits funding. Your solution-centric approach and flexibility will be instrumental in offering ideas to improve benefit program practices and adapt as requirements change and/or evolve.
  • You will prepare reconciliations and investigate, analyze, advance, and resolve reconciling differences for APL’s general ledger accounts for benefit plan liabilities, ensuring proper accounting of employee benefits’ activities and financial statement completeness and accuracy in accordance with GAAP principles. Your attention to detail, organization, and prioritization skills will come into play while you track and maintain internal and regulatory controls to ensure data quality via data analysis and reports.
  • Using your strong interpersonal and communication skills, you will respond to and support customer inquiries and sensitive and confidential matters that fosters a trustworthy and collaborative environment. Your interest in critical thinking and effective problem-solving while safeguarding sensitive information will facilitate timely and applicable solutions that are advantageous in a fast-paced environment.
  • You will perform other staff accountant duties as assigned, including General Ledger account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, cost processing support, JHU data requests, Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) audit requests, and support Workday implementation activities.




You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...



  • Possess a BS in Accounting, Finance, or other Business related field with a strong academic background in Accounting and have 2 or more years of experience performing pension/benefits accounting
  • Have experience with preparing complex account reconciliations, researching data anomalies, and analyzing financial data
  • Are excellent at multitasking, extracting data needs, prioritizing assignments, communicating progress, and meeting deadlines
  • Exhibit outstanding attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Are able to collaboratively perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with all levels of staff and vendors
  • Have a strong desire to learn and can easily adapt to changing environments
  • Show a proficiency in working with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Are a certified public accountant (CPA)
  • Have experience working in an Oracle accounting system environment (i.e., Oracle Projects and General Ledger) and/or other APL computer systems
  • Have experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) or Government contracting environment
